National Apprenticeship Week 2020

Last week was National Apprenticeship Week. This was a great opportunity for all types of employers to try and attract the best young talent into their businesses.

There were various events up and down the country where employers welcomed potential students into their offices, attended open evenings and generally tried to spread the word that a modern apprenticeship has benefits for both employer and employee. The link below is a great start if you haven’t heard of the scheme but would like to know more.

Here at Noviun, we realise that attracting the next generation of Architects / Technicians / Visualisers is getting harder and harder. Construction as a career might not seem the option it once was; Brexit has taken its toll on an ageing workforce and many young students have turned their back on the industry. The apprenticeship scheme is a real job, with hands-on experience, a salary and the chance to train while you work. Once completed, you will have already gained years of valuable experience, and in many cases, cemented a position with an employer.

One of our bright young talents, Justin Tiller, started an apprenticeship with us back in September 2019. The government apprenticeship scheme helps employers by heavily subsidising the course fee’s (as long as the course is part of the governments approved list). In return, the students are given days off to attend University and complete course work. As the course is deemed “part time” students still have plenty of days in the office, so get to learn from the other more experienced members of staff, while contributing to the business during the remainder of their time.

However, not everyone knows where their career lies, with so many choices and university beckoning. For this reason, we regularly take students fresh from their “A” levels for a period of work experience. Over the next 2 weeks, we are welcoming Charlie Joy into the office, to give him a taster of life in an Architects practice. During his time he will work with Architects, Technicians, Visualisers, Model Makers and within the Financial department.

The benefits of work experience include the following;

  • Apply your knowledge and skills in a work setting
  • Increase skills and competencies within the work place
  • Give you an insight into the way organisations operate and the challenges they face
  • Help you to understand a particular job or industry
  • Help to clarify your career goals.

Noviun believe this is key not only for our social value, but also because you never know what talent you may discover.  Nothing gives us more pleasure than helping mould someone’s future, or assisting in their potentially confusing career choices.
