Foxwood Academy 2, Nottinghamshire

Foxwood Academy 2 is a special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) school proposed for Bramcote, Nottinghamshire. The scheme will provide a new purpose-built secondary facility for 150 pupils aged 11–18, supporting a wide range of needs across Pathway 1 to Pathway 3. The new school forms part of a wider educational setting linked to Foxwood Academy 1 and has been designed to create a clear sense of progression, independence and belonging for pupils as they move through specialist education.

The vision for Bramcote SEND School is to create model learning spaces that enable students to flourish in an environment carefully shaped around accessibility, wellbeing and specialist learning. The proposals include 16 classrooms, specialist teaching spaces, a multi-purpose hall, dining facilities, a MUGA, external classrooms, a dedicated Vocational Food Building and a Preparation for Adulthood building designed to support life-skills learning in a more domestic setting.

A key objective of the design is to provide a high-quality secondary SEND environment that responds directly to pupil needs through both architecture and landscape. All key teaching spaces are located at ground floor level for ease of mobility, Pathway 1 classrooms are future-proofed for hoist provision, and each teaching wing has direct access to secure external learning and play space. The building has been developed as an X-shaped arrangement that balances clear zoning, passive supervision, and strong connections to the surrounding landscape.

The site has been shaped to retain as much of its mature landscape setting as possible, with woodland edges, existing trees, grassland and sensory planting helping to define a calm and biodiverse environment. Outdoor classrooms, walking and cycling routes, rain gardens and habitat areas are integrated throughout the proposals, while parts of the scheme, including the dining area, main hall and MUGA, are also designed to support out-of-hours community use.
