Hemel Hempstead School

Noviun are delighted to have worked with Tilbury Douglas on the delivery of a new secondary school building for The Hemel Hempstead School.

Located within the school’s existing campus, the new three-storey building provides modern teaching and support accommodation, including new classrooms, staff offices, DT workshops and art rooms. The project replaces a series of older single and two-storey blocks with a more efficient building footprint, creating a net gain in external space and improving the wider organisation of the school site.

Occupying a prominent position along the central north-south axis, the building reinforces this as the main pupil route between key areas of the campus. Its position opposite the original Main Block helps to frame the top playing field, creating a more clearly defined external quadrangle and strengthening the relationship between new and existing buildings.

The site arrangement was developed in response to consultation and feasibility-stage design work, with the new building positioned to the south of the main lawn, parallel to the existing row of mature trees and facing the Main Block heritage asset. This considered placement allows the new accommodation to sit confidently within the established school setting while respecting the character and structure of the existing campus.

Now complete, the project provides The Hemel Hempstead School with high-quality, efficient and future-focused learning environments that support pupils and staff while enhancing the overall campus layout.
