The decision to grant the planning approval was voted unanimously by London Borough of Havering Council’s Planning Committee at a specially convened meeting on 7th February 2022. Prior to the approval the proposals went through an extensive design development with key stakeholders and Havering Borough Council’s planning and highways teams as well as quality review panel to ensure the development is of high quality and achieves the aspirations, mitigating impact on local infrastructure.
The new sixth form will re-use the site of the disused swimming pool and associated changing room facilities and will benefit from being co-located with the existing Harris Academy Rainham with shared facilities as well as offer community use. The design of the building was articulated to create various social zones within the site and variations in building height to minimise impact on the local residential properties. The design also incorporates biodiverse green roof.
The project will provide much needed sixth form provision for 400 young people in Rainham. The new building will provide great learning facilities to prepare the students for further education, training or employment. We look forward to seeing this project progress.
